You Don't Have to Be an Artist to Paint Your Pet

Have you ever looked at a painting and thought, “I could never do that”? You might be surprised. Painting does not always have to be about being naturally artistic or knowing exactly what you are doing before you pick up a paintbrush.

That is the idea behind Paint Your Pet at Pascal Arts. Instead of starting with a blank canvas, you send in a photo of your pet beforehand, and it is hand-drawn onto an A4 canvas ready for you to paint. This means you can focus on the fun part without worrying about getting the drawing right.

The real lesson is learning how to look at colour. Once you start paying attention, you will notice that your pet is not simply brown, black or white. There are all sorts of different shades hiding in the picture, and learning to use them can completely change the finished painting.

Start With a Photo of Your Pet

The first step is choosing a photo of your pet that you would love to turn into a painting. Before the class, you send the photo to Pascal Arts, and it is hand-drawn onto an A4 canvas for you. So, when you arrive, you already have the outline of your pet ready to go.

This takes away one of the parts that can make painting feel intimidating. You do not need to worry about getting the face, ears or markings in the right place. Instead, you can spend your time learning how to work with the colours and bring the image to life.

It also makes the finished painting much more personal. You are not painting a random dog or cat from a reference image. You are creating a picture of your own pet, with all the little details that make them recognisable.

Learn to See More Than Just Brown, Black or White

When you look at a photo of your pet, you might think you can see their colours quite clearly. A brown dog is brown, a black cat is black, right? But look a little closer and you will start to notice so much more. There can be warm and cool shades, lighter areas, darker patches and unexpected colours created by the light.

This is one of the main things you learn during Paint Your Pet. Instead of simply picking the paint colour that seems closest to what you see, you learn to look more carefully and follow the colours in the photo. It sounds simple, but it can completely change the way your painting comes together.

Once you start adding those different shades, the painting begins to feel more alive. You are not just filling in an outline anymore. You are using colour to create depth, detail and character, which is what makes the finished pet portrait so much more interesting.

You Don't Need to Be Good at Painting

One of the best things about Paint Your Pet is that you do not need to consider yourself an artist to take part. The class is designed for all skill levels, so it does not matter if you have been painting for years or have not picked up a paintbrush since school.

You are guided through the process and shown how to look at the photo, identify the colours and use them on your canvas. Rather than worrying about whether every brushstroke is perfect, you can focus on learning and enjoying the process.

The goal is not to walk away with a perfect masterpiece. It is about trying something new, learning how colour can change a painting and seeing what you can create. And, as the previous classes have shown, you might be pleasantly surprised by the result.

See What You Can Create

You might walk into the class thinking you have no idea what you are doing, but that can make the finished painting even more satisfying. Once you have your outline, your paints and a few tips to guide you, you can start seeing your pet take shape on the canvas.

The previous Paint Your Pet classes have already produced some really lovely paintings. Everyone approaches their pet a little differently, and the results do not need to look exactly like the original photo to work. Sometimes the colours you choose or the little details you add are what give the painting its character.

There is something quite nice about seeing a familiar face come to life on a canvas that you painted yourself. You may not leave with a professional portrait, but you will leave with something personal, a new skill and a painting you can be proud of.
